Knife or butcher steels are a must have for any kitchen. They are used as a honing tool, and can be used as often as with every use. The "blade" is either round or oval, and is typically made from honing steel. Handles can be made from wood, plastic, or polypropylene.
Honing a knife realigns and straightens the knife blade so that it is able to make more precise cuts. It does not remove any material from the blade. This can be done on a regular basis. The blade will seem sharper and the knife will slice and chop better because of the corrected positioning of the blade.
Sharpening can be done using a sharpening steel, or a manual or electric sharpener. Sharpening a knife removes bits of the blade to create a new edge for the blade. It should be done infrequently.

Please also note that the shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full pound.
We do offer free shipping promotions from time to time. We are currently offering free shipping on all orders over $99 to the continental United States. We do not offer free shipping to Hawaii or Alaska.
